PMP Exam Online From Home Experience: Is There Any Advantage Doing It Remotely?

PMP Exam Online From Home Experience
pmp exam online from home experience

The Project Management Institute’s (PMI) PMP Certification can also be done online. This is a relatively recent change to the program, which came into effect during the height of COVID. Unable to host students in person, the PMI worked with the myriad of institutions that administer the exam to facilitate it online.

PMP Exam Online From Home Experience: In Person vs. Online

The main differences of doing the exam online vs doing them offline (in person) are:

  • it’s proctored, meaning that you will be monitored throughout the exam, through your webcam. This means that you need to have a compatible machine in the first place to do the exam, so if you don’t have a webcam, it could be a good time to buy one (and possibly expense it back to your organization),
  • There are 200 questions, broken down into two blocks:
    • 89 questions in a first block, a 10 minute break and then,
    • 111 questions in a second block.
  • It’s worth noting in the above that once you finish the first block, you can’t go back to to it, i.e. it’s like two separate exams. This threw off quite a few people who might have expected to be able to go back to the first part, but the proctor should be clear enough to you about this.
  • No note pads allowed. You will have a “digital whiteboard”, that lets you make notes, as well as a calculator. No use of offline tools allowed. The proctor will ask that you provide visual evidence of your work area before taking the exam to verify that you can’t gain an unfair advantage.
  • A student from the Northern Italy chapter of the PMI had noted that the virtual notepad wasn’t that user friendly and that they would have appreciated a tutorial before beginning the exam. There’s precious time lost in figuring out the tool that should be better spent digesting the questions.
  • Apparently if you’re moving around too much, you can catch the attention of the proctor, who might think (or assume) that you’re trying to grab notes or otherwise, so it’s best to not move around too much. This also means you may not be allowed to simply go to the bathroom when you want to

Don’t Take the PMP Certification Online If…

  • You don’t have reliable devices. You don’t want to spend time messing around with these during the exam. Worse yet, you might be automatically failed if these aren’t working during your exam.
  • You don’t have reliable internet. Similar to the above.
  • You would rather focus entirely on the exam and aren’t as worried about COVID exposure. As of writing this blog, COVID is not as scary as it once was. More people are going back to doing the PMP certification in person. You likely won’t find a clear advantage doing it online unless you lived far from any test center or are quite immunocompromised.

More Actual PMP Exam Online From Home Experiences

Ultimately, listening to people who have done it is the best way to put yourself in their shoes and experience it. The comments are also a great place to see what people who are in your shoes are asking that you might not have thought of yet as a potential problem.

This one from Alvin the PM is a top video going through this.
Prazion here doesn’t think it was a great experience.
This one from StormWind Studios is a bit more polished, less about the actual student experience but more about what to expect

Hope these help and as always, best of luck!

Project Management Certification Online Canada: 3 Suitable Certifications To Earn More In Months

Does this sound like you?

  • You’re not quite an up-and-comer anymore in your large, multinational organization. However, you’ve definitely been around the traps before and are known as a project management problem solver across departments,
  • You’ve been watching the headlines over the last few years nervously. COVID, upturns, downturns. It was a game of Russian Roulette, particularly for the tech industry. You’re feeling safe-ish, but don’t want to leave your professional future to the whims of the economy.
  • You’ve been getting modest pay increases at best, barely beating inflation, but with the insane increases post COVID, you’ve actually been getting a net pay drop. Cost of living is biting to the bone and you need to find a way to get paid more, stat.

Project Management Certification Online Canada: What’s Out There?

I’m running this blog for people like you. While I don’t fully believe any of us are in control of our futures, being more proactive is better than ruminating and taking what comes. You’re here to supercharge your project management career and stand out from the rest. I’ll go through a few options for you.

Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification

This is the namesake of the blog I run, so I am a bit biased. However, I think it’s for good reason. The PMP Certification online is a way to study and take the exam through the Internet. It’s the golden standard for project management professionals in North America and can lead to pay increases of up to 35% in the USA. PMP Canada (linked below) is a great starting point to find a vendor that suits you.

https://www.pmpcanada.com/

To apply for it, you need to have either:

  • a high school diploma, with at least five years of project management experience, with 7,500 hours leading and directing projects and 35 hours of project management education, OR…
  • a 4-year undergraduate degree and at least three years of project management experience, with 4,500 hours leading and directing projects and 35 hours of project management education.

Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)

If you don’t have the time to study for and pass the entire PMP Certification, often a nice stepping stone to get the attention of your superiors is the study for the CAPM. The eligiblity requirements are similar but different: at least 1,500 hours of project management experience or 23 hours of project management education. It also costs less, being $225 USD for PMI (Project Management Institute) members and $300 for non-PMI members.

Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)

https://www.pmimontreal.org/en/agile-certified-practitioner-pmi-acp

If you’re wanting to go down a slightly technical route, dealing in the software industry for example, the Agile Certified Practitioner might be more up your alley. It utilizes the best of PMI’s project management ideologies, pairing it with the globally accepted standard of agile methodology to give you a modern yet highly applicable certification. With it, you can approach the likes of Microsoft, Google, Amazon and the like to show you have what it takes to run their biggest projects, helping them reach their goals.

Here is their eligibility criteria (there’s a lot so I’ve taken a screenshot instead of copy pasting it verbatim):

Which is the Best PMP Certification? [Updated for 2023]

You’re at a crossroads in your career. Keep doing what your doing, maybe climb the ladder at your current company, get nominal pay bumps that are eaten away immediately by inflation and the crazy cost of living.

Or…

Take your career into your own hands and command a higher salary with an industry leading certification, recognized by top firms and companies all around the world.

Red pill, or blue pill? I know what I’d rather pick.

The PMP Certification

The PMP Certification is what I’m referring to here. According to Earning Power: Project Management Salary Survey – Twelfth Edition., PMP holders are paid on average 16% more than their non-accredited counterparts, with salaries nearly 33% higher in the United States.

This isn’t to mention the prestige of the roles that are available to PMP Certification holders. Not only do these people become senior project management consultants, they leave middle management and become VPs, directors, maybe even gracing the C-suite.

Which is the Best PMP Certification?

This leads us to the question, “which is the best PMP Certification?” To be clear, there is only one PMP Certification. What people are probably referring to here is which educational institute is associated with the most prestigious holders of the certificate?

Given that the landscape has changed so much, with not only training course work moved online, but the exams themselves (since COVID-19), I’ll provide a top three list that will apply to as many readers as possible. This blog will produce more region specific content over time, stay tuned!

#1 – PMI Institute

PMP Certification Online

You can’t go past the PMI Institute as the first choice option for getting the PMP Certification. It’s the creator of the program in the first place and has the most up-to-date content and guidelines that all the other education institutions abide by.

You can download both the PMP Exam Content Outline and the Certification Handbook in 17 different languages for free, just so you have a clearer idea of what’s entailed before doing the exam.

Member cost: $405 USD

Non-Member cost: $555 USD

#2 – Edureka

PMP Certification online in India

India is one of the largest geographies for PMP holders. As a result, there are a large number of providers. Some have been around longer than others and not all are equal, despite, what you might be led to believe.

Edureka has been around since mid-2011 and has more than a decade under its belt. Its vision is to become “the largest online learning ecosystem for continuing education, in partnership with corporates and academia.”

the largest online learning ecosystem for continuing education, in partnership with corporates and academia.

Edureka’s Vision

PMP Certification is one of several certifications that it offers, but it’s by no means diluted in its student experience. They have 1,000’s of testimonials from satisfied students.

PMP® Certification Exam fee with PMI® Membership – ₹23,459

PMP® Certification Exam fee without PMI® Membership – ₹42,863

#3 – StarAgile

PMP Certification Online in the USA

StarAgile is often mentioned as being the first-choice institution behind the PMI in the USA. It’s got an excellent track record of producing winning students, who graduate with the PMP Certification and then go on to have fulfilling careers, armed with industry-leading knowledge.

Live Virtual Training – $799 USD

These three providers are three of the best in the largest geographies of students in the world. There’s a high chance that you will be looked after if you can enroll in one of these three. I’d be keen to hear your experience as a current student of another provider, it will help to build out this blog so do reach out if you are. Good luck!

PMP Certification Online Boot Camp: 5 Different Options and Price Points

PMP Certification Online Boot Camp: It’ll Be Hard, But Worth It

Have you left getting PMP certified a bit late? Are you cutting it close to renewing but haven’t had the time to study? Are you having difficulties accessing in-person study venues because of COVID-19, or simply for the fact that venues have closed down, or are too far from where you are? That’s where having online boot camps might help.

These PMP Certification online boot camps can not only help you get all the requisite knowledge to pass the PMP exam, they can do so in a much shorter time frame, also giving you the flexibility to choose when and where you do the study.

I feel that everyone deserves the opportunity to upskill, no matter their level of income. That’s why I’ve included a few options that I’ve found that will cater for those who might not have hundreds of dollars lying around.

What a good PMP Certification Online Boot Camp should achieve

There are a plethora of choices out there at different price points. I’ll cover a range below. No matter if you choose one of these or others, they should have the following qualities:

  1. Should cover the required 35 contact hours (PDUs) of project management training, as per PMI guidelines,
  2. Should be available on-demand, 24/7. Whether you’re based in Asia, America, Africa, Europe or the Asia Pacific, you need to be able to access the training material when you need them.
  3. Should be standardized. The PMP is a global certification, so you need to make sure it is truly accredited and not a rip off of the real thing.

3 Options at Different Price Points

Udemy: PMP Course (Knowledge Area-Based) (39 PDUs)

Cost: <$20 USD (once off)

You can’t go past Udemy as a low cost option for education. You get access to certified trainers who have done the hard yards and walked the walk, happy to share their knowledge with you now. The only thing to be wary of is the quality of the educator. Do some research on the educator themselves, contact them, even find them on LinkedIn (they should have a LinkedIn profile if they’re legitimate) and see if they’re for real. The best thing is that if you don’t think you’ve gotten the value you should have, Udemy has a 30-day Money-Back Guarantee.

GoSkills: Project Management Bootcamp

Cost: $250/year

GoSkills is another provider that can help you achieve success in the PMP Certification. This particular course here is a bootcamp that is run by a professional PMP holder, Ray Sheen. It has 121 lessons, over 60 hours of study material and is CPD certified. $250/year is a bit more expensive than Udemy, but still a respectable price and is cheaper than other options.

Project Management Academy: PMP Certification Training Online

Cost: $1,995 USD (once off)

The Project Management Academy is one of the more reputable online education providers to have come out of the United States. The great thing is that they have an online bootcamp option that anyone can take from anywhere in the world, providing 35 hours PDUs, one-on-one instructor tutoring and best feature yet, 2,000+ test exam questions in a simulator to really prepare you for the real thing. It’s a pretty hefty cost, but might be the best option to get you battle ready.

If possible for any of these, see if you can expense them to your company, particularly the last option. If not, the Udemy or GoSkills options might be best to get you upskilled and earning enough first instead of coughing up the money to begin with.

Can you get a PMP Certification Online?

can you get a PMP certification online?
Can you get a PMP Certification Online?

Three years ago, at the time of writing this blog post, a nasty little virus appeared for the first time in the wet markets in Wuhan, China. Coronavirus (COVID-19) has permanently altered the way the world works. It isn’t all doom and gloom, however. It’s meant that the Project Management Institute (PMI) that gives out the PMP Certification had made the unprecedented move in April 2020 to allow the exam to be completed online.

tl;dr – the answer to the question “can you get a PMP Certification online?” is yes! The rest of this blog is going to tell you about how you can best prepare yourself for this.

How it works

There is a wealth of resources available, both paid and free, that can assist you with completing the PMP Certification online. The PMI, in an effort to still maintain the integrity of their certification process, enforces a proctoring process to make sure people are abiding by the rules.

For those who are unfamiliar with proctoring, it’s essentially letting the exam instigator have surveillance over the students while they’re performing the exam in real time. This means that they will be able to see you through webcam and possibly also hear you over microphone. This also means that you need to have an adequate machine/set up that facilitates the proctor process.

This video from Yassine Tounsi is a great summary of the differences between doing the exam at a venue and doing it through online proctor.

Key Points and Differences of the In-Person and Proctored Exam

Beyond the difference doing the exam online and in person, there isn’t a material difference in content of the exam questions themselves.

  • There are still 180 questions (down from 200).
  • There are 230 minutes allocated to complete the exam.
  • There is an additional 10 minute break for the online proctored exam, but that’s the only difference.
  • There are 25 questions that aren’t graded. You don’t know which ones they are before the exam, so you have to answer them all to the best of your ability.
  • The passing score of the PMP exam isn’t concrete. Some sources say that it’s 61%, but there isn’t a definitive source of this, no less from the PMI itself.

How to prepare for the online version of the PMP Certification exam

While Coronavirus isn’t having as much of an impact as it has in the past, you might still want to do the exam online, now knowing there’s an option for it. Personally, I’m not as keen having a stranger spying at me through my computer, so I’d rather still do it in person.

Irrespective of what you choose, you can study the PMP Certification online. There are a number of good providers all over the world. Doing a quick Google search will yield several results and of course, this website your reading is also gradually being built out so watch this space!

So what do you think? Would you consider doing the exam online? Or are you more of a traditionalist, preferring to do it in person?

What is the PMP Certification Course?

No matter what stage in your professional career, there are ways for you to get a boost. Depending on the organization you work for you might be:

  • feeling stuck where you are and are trying to hatch an “escape plan”, or,
  • your organization values you and is actively encouraging you to “level up” and become more valuable.

Irrespective of whether you’re in the former or the latter, considering doing the PMP Certification online is a great use of your resources to help get to the next level.

What is the PMP Certification Course?

The PMP Certification course is a way for you to prepare for the PMP Certification. There are several available, so the one you do mainly comes down to cost and whether you do it online or off.

Any course that adequately prepares you for the PMP Certification should cover the 49 Project Management processes that are listed in the PMBOK ®Guide – 6th edition (Project Management Body Of Knowledge) guide. These processes are further broken out across 10 knowledge areas and 5 process groups.

N.B.: there have been some changes to the syllabus since early 2022, which the lists below take into account:

10 Knowledge Areas:

  1. Project Integration Management
  2. Project Scope Management
  3. Project Schedule Management
  4. Project Cost Management
  5. Project Quality Management
  6. Project Resource Management
  7. Project Communication Management
  8. Project Risk Management
  9. Project Procurement Management
  10. Project Stakeholder Management

5 Process Groups:

  1. Initiating.
  2. Planning.
  3. Executing.
  4. Monitoring and Controlling.
  5. Closing.

What Should Happen After Successful Completion of a PMP Certification Course

Doing the course itself is no mean feat, but the rewards are significant. Here’s why it’s worthwhile considering completing one:

  • competence: to even sign up to do the PMP Certification course to begin with, you need to have already have had 7,000+ hours of documented project management experience (with a high school diploma). Even with on the job experience, there isn’t any guarantee that you’ll know everything required to pass the PMP. Doing the coursework will mean you’re vastly more prepared to pass the exam and be properly certified.
  • confidence: have you ever met those people who are very competent but lack confidence? They’re happy working in the background while other people take credit for their work. It’s possible that I’ve actually described you! The coursework (and exam) will go through scenarios that you will face on a regular basis. You’ll learn how to behave and perform under pressure, taking back the credit that belongs to you.
  • clarity: clarity will come in everything that you do, both before and after passing the exam. You will communicate better, negotiate better and drive your point home like never before. Doing the PMP certification course helps you hone your skills into a razor sharp edge that captures peoples’ attention, both beneath and above you and helps you command the respect that you deserve.
